Pattern Plus
This week we are looking at Pattern. Pattern is one of the principles of design. What is a principle of design you ask? Principles of design are just a way to classify how the elements of art are used. Remember, the elements of art are Line; Shape; Color; Space; Form; Texture & Value. The elements of art are all around us making up the things we experience.
For the activity you will create a pattern and incorporate one additional principle of design into the pattern. Choose one additional element of design from the following options.
Balance Alignment Emphasis Proportion Movement
Pattern Contrast Unity
View the Principles of design video first. Then check out the 15 Zentalgle Patterns #2 video. You can copy a zentangle pattern that also incorporates another principle of design from the list. Or, you can modify one of the designs so that it incorporates a second principle of design. There isn't really a wrong way to do this. As long as you can explain which other principle your design includes and why you think that your design is an example of that principle. Your design can be done in pencil, ink, or what ever you choose to draw with. Don't add color this week. We will be doing that in the future.
To Do:
Watch both videos below
Practice drawing some pattern designs which also incorporate one other element of design from the list above.
Decide on a design that is the best example of pattern plus another principle of design
Draw your pattern and cover an 8.5 x11 paper with the pattern
Write in the class question which additional principle of design you see in your pattern and explain why.
Upload an image of your pattern to your school google drive and attach it to the assignment to turn it in.

Simplify
Find a design or a pattern that you like and upload a picture of it. Then find a way to simplify the design or pattern and recreate a simplified version of the original. You can reduce the number of colors from the original, eliminate some of the shapes or smooth out some of the lines. You get to decide the amount of simplifying you will apply to the original design. You can use google drawing or another digital design tool that you have access to, or you can work by hand using pencils, crayons markers or watercolor. You may even be able to simplify a design using cut construction paper. The video has some examples of simple designs. It also has some good advice. This week we aren't necessarily designing a logo, but it is our goal to simplify designs. Be sure to upload your original reference and your finished product. Have a great week.
